Motorcycle crashes are a major concern in California, where the risks for riders are usually higher than those of motorists. What is the primary cause of motorcycle crashes? The leading cause is usually speeding, but there are many common causes.
While speeding stands out, other factors should also be taken into account. Doing so is vital when seeking accountability for an accident. You can move forward more easily with the right approach and a Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer.
Why Is Speeding the Leading Cause of Motorcycle Crashes?
Speeding is the leading cause of motorcycle crashes, significantly increasing the risk of severe injuries and fatalities. With the most recent data from NCH Health Statistics in 2021, 33% of motorcyclists in fatal crashes were speeding, and riders between the ages of 21 and 24 were 49% more likely to speed.
Excessive speed reduces reaction time and will make it harder for a motorcyclist to avoid changes in traffic conditions or sudden obstacles.
When a motorcyclist speeds, they easily lose control of their bikes, especially when a road is uneven or curved. At a higher speed, the force of the impact during a collision is greater, which means a potentially more serious injury or death.
The risks are higher for motorcyclists as they lack the protective barriers that motorists have, which creates more of a need for safety measures.
Law enforcement throughout California continues to reveal the dangers of speeding with awareness campaigns and increased patrol in high-risk areas. These efforts are put into place to encourage safer habits and adherence to the speed limits. As more people recognize the risks of speeding, more motorcyclists can make better decisions.

What Other Causes Lead to Motorcycle Crashes in California?
Speeding is the biggest factor, but several other causes contribute to motorcycle accidents throughout the state. It is helpful to familiarize yourself with these causes, and it is important for legal considerations.
Some of the primary causes of motorcycle crashes aside from speeding are:
- Other drivers not noticing the motorcycle
- Motorcyclists or drivers changing lanes without proper signaling or checking blind spots
- When drivers or motorcyclists change lanes without checking blind spots or signaling properly
- Driving a vehicle after drinking alcohol or being impaired by drugs
- Uneven roads, debris, or potholes are all risky for motorcycles
- When the motorcyclist does not have enough experience, which leads to a loss of control or poor decision-making
There are many causes for a motorcycle crash. It is important to know it could be either party’s fault, or you could share fault. By understanding different scenarios, it can help you when you take legal action.
Are Motorcyclists or Other Drivers Usually at Fault?
Determining fault in a motorcycle accident depends heavily on your specific situation and the details of the crash. Both motorcyclists and other drivers can be responsible, but many accidents occur because drivers fail to see motorcycles.
Because of their smaller size, this can be tragic. The lack of visibility often leads to collisions during turns, merging into traffic, or lane changes.
Sometimes, motorcyclists may contribute to accidents through speeding, weaving between vehicles, or failing to follow traffic laws. However, other drivers are frequently at fault when they act negligently, such as by failing to check blind spots or misjudging a motorcycle’s speed and distance. These factors make fault determination a bit more time-consuming, and it often requires careful evaluation of the events leading up to the crash.
You must prove fault to submit an insurance claim and move forward with a legal case. This process will usually involve checking traffic camera footage, other photos and videos, reviewing police reports, and examining witnesses’ statements to piece together what happened. With the right evidence, it becomes easier to hold the responsible party accountable and pursue potential compensation.

Are There Any Defenses for Speeding?
In legal proceedings following a motorcycle accident, defendants may present various defenses to justify speeding. However, the success of these defenses depends on the context and evidence available. Common defenses for speeding include:
- Claim the need to speed due to a medical or other urgent emergency
- Argue that a malfunctioning speedometer led to unintentional speeding
- Suggests that law enforcement used unfair methods to catch speeding motorists
These defenses require substantial proof and may not always remove liability. This is one of the reasons why you need a California auto accident lawyer after a collision caused by a negligent driver. They can provide guidance on the viability of such defenses based on the specifics of the case.
